World number three Rafael Nadal has pulled out of the upcoming BNP Paribas Paris Masters due to ‘personal reasons’ according to a statement by the tournament organisers.

Nadal is currently playing through the pain barrier at the Swiss Open in Basel, only his third tournament since Wimbledon, despite suffering from appendicitis.

His withdrawal from the Paris Masters however puts his participation at the season-ending ATP Tour Finals in doubt as he has been contemplating undergoing surgery.

The 28-year old had earlier stated ”I’ve had a few months without playing much tennis and taking the antibiotics makes the body go down. But I’m happy to be in the tournament [in Basel].”

Also out of the Paris Masters is US Open champion Marin Cilic who withdrew due to a right arm injury according to the tournament organisers.
