Cesare Prandelli has resigned as Italian national team coach moments after being eliminated from the 2014 FIFA World Cup in a 1-0 loss to Uriguay this evening in Natal, Brazil.

In a statement after the match, Prandelli said ”I talked to the President of the Federation and Demetrio Albertini, and gave my resignation. The technical set-up didn’t work, and I take all responsibility for that.”

The former Parma manager stated further that ”Something has changed since my contract was renewed. I don’t know why. I chose a certain technical plan and that’s why I am resigning, because it did not work. My resignation is irrevocable.”

Italian FA President Giancarlo Abete has also resigned from his position but hoped Prandelli, formerly Fiorentina and AS Roma manager, would reconsider his own decision.

Prandelli, who had recently signed a two-year extension to his deal, had taken over from Marcelo Lippi after the 2010 World Cup, guiding Italy to the Euro 2012 final and to third place at the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup, where Italy had beaten Uruguay to win bronze.
