The Edo State Commissioner of Police, Mr Umoru Peter Ozigi, has formally retired from service after attaining the mandatory retirement age of 60.

Ozigi who was born on 25 January 1965, was enlisted into the Police Force in 1992 as a Cadet Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP).

He served for 23 meritorious years in various capacities and rose to the height of his career.

The colourful pullout parade was witnessed by top police officers, representatives of the Oba of Benin, the State Governor and family members who cheered him.

The outgoing CP said he was leaving the Police with a sense of gratitude, fulfilment and reflection.

He said: “From my first day as a Cadet to the Commissioner of Police in Edo state, each experience has shaped me professionally.

“I have had the privilege of working with dedicated officers, supportive colleagues and resilient communities and together we fight to uphold the law, protect the innocent and serve the nation with integrity.”

Ozigi expressed gratitude and appreciation to the leadership of the police force for their guidance and support throughout his career.

He also commended his fellow officers for their commitment and bravery and appreciated the support of his family.

The CP hailed the government and people of Edo for their trust and cooperation, even as he commended their collaborative efforts in crime prevention and community engagement.

“I hope the relationship between the police and the public will continue to foster a safer environment for all.

“I urge you to remain steadfast in their duty, serving with passion and upholding the values of their profession,” he said

In his remarks, the State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, noted that the outgone CP brought stability and peace to the state during his period.

Okpebholo who was represented by his Deputy, Dennis Idahosa, thanked Ozigi for his sterling performance in the state to round up his service to Fatherland.

“The outgoing CP Ozigi came at the time when Edo State was facing the challenges of cultism and cult-related fights, but he was able to bring peace and stability to the state.

“So, we are here to thank him for his sacrifices and his outstanding service to the people of Edo State, ensuring that there is stability and peace in the state,” he said.

He, however, charged the income CP, Betty Enekpen Otimenyin, to continue with the progress her predecessor made.

“My message to the incoming Commissioner of Police is she was born and raised here and knows the challenges that we have and would prefer solution to them,” he said.

In his goodwill message, the Assistant Inspector General of Police (IGP), Zone 5, Mr Arungwa Udo, commended Ozigi for his exceptional service to the nation and the maintenance of order in Edo.

He noted that the legacy of the retiree will outlive him and also guide others behind him.

“Retiring does not mean you would be tired. We will look forward to you for advice based on your enormous experience,” he said.
