Lewandowski: ruins Arsenal

Bayern München produced a clinical performance to overrun Arsenal 5-1 in Munich, with Thomas Müller scoring two of their five goals as the Group F leaders ran amok.

Bayern looked to assert their dominance from the start with Arsenal attempting to press high and give their hosts little time on the ball.

That approach was undone in the tenth minute, Thiago Alcántara delivering a perfect cross to meet Robert Lewandowski’s brilliantly-timed run; the Pole expertly headed in his fourth goal in this season’s UEFA Champions League.

Olivier Giroud scored Arsenal’s consolation goal.

But fittingly the last word belonged to Bayern. Müller scored his second and his team’s fifth in the 89th minute, slotting past Čech to round off an impressive home display.

In Greece, Felipe Pardo came off the bench with Olympiacos trailing but struck twice – including a 90th-minute winner – to take the Greek side six points clear of both Arsenal and Dinamo in Group F,  with two fixtures remaining. Dinamo had Josip Pivarić sent off.

In London, Chelsea and Jose Mourinho were saved by  Brazilian Willian’s sublime free-kick seven minutes from time.

The winning goal got Chelsea out of another hole as they leapfrogged Dynamo Kyiv to move second in Group G.

The spectacular winner came shortly after Aleksandar Dragovic had equalised for the visitors, cancelling out his own goal which gave the English champions a half-time advantage.

In the second match of the group, Maccabi’s hopes of reaching the last 16 are over. Cristian Tello, André André and Miguel Layún were on the mark for Porto. Eren Zahavi’s spot kick did at least ensure Maccabi are no longer in danger of becoming only the second team ever – after Maccabi Haifa in 2009/10 – to end the group stage without a goal or a point.

Zenit St Petersburg have qualified in Group H, by beating Lyon in France, with a brace by  Artem Dzyuba. André Villas-Boas’s side’s  have maintained their 100% record. Lyon’s misery was compounded by the dismissal of Maxime Gonalons.

Gent’s chances of qualifying would have been over with defeat, but Sven Kums’ 49th-minute penalty earned them a maiden UEFA Champions League win and moved them to within two points of their second-placed visitors.
