Nine time European champions Real Madrid pulled of a stunning away performance in easing to a 4-0 defeat of defending champions Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena to reach this season’s UEFA Champions League final with an astounding 5-0 aggregate win.

Having won the first leg 1-0 in Madrid last week, Real took the lead in the second leg with their first shot on target through defender Sergio Ramos, who was left unmarked to head past Manuel Neuer.

Ramos would double Real’s lead just four minutes later in similar fashion, heading home unmarked with the Bayern defence’s attention wholly on Cristiano Ronaldo in the build-up to both goals.

Needing three goals at that point, Pep Guardiola’s Bayern continued to have more of ball possession but were nonetheless unable to find a way through the Real defence as chances were at a premium.

Instead it was Real that got a third goal nine minutes before half time, Angel di Maria, Karim Benzema and Gareth Bale combining to set up Ronaldo for the goal in a lethal counter-attacking move.

The second half saw Bayern finally test Iker Casillas in the Real goal, albeit in vain. The visitors would then wrap up a memorable night with a fourth goal after 89 minutes, Ronaldo firing a low freekick in.

Real’s win ends a run of three consecutive losses at the semi-final stage and also ensures the record of a reigning champion never defending the title successfully since 1992 remains.

Carlo Ancelotti’s side now awaits the winner from the second semi-final between Chelsea; his former club, and Atletico Madrid which is tied goalless from the first leg.

Real Madrid, chasing a treble of titles this season, would however have to do without midfielder Xabi Alonso in the final next month in Lisbon through suspension after he received a yellow card in tonight’s match.
