Benfica gained some consolation this evening, days after losing via penalties to Sevilla in the Europa League final, by lifting the Taca de Portugal thanks to a 1-0 win over Rio Ave.

A Nicolas Gaitan goal 25 minutes into the final was enough to give Benfica their 25th Portuguese Cup triumph as well as complete a historic domestic treble for the Lisbon club.

Benfica won the Portuguese league title weeks ago and also claimed the Taca de Liga after coincidentally beating Rio Ave, same opponent they overcame in the Taca de Portugal final.

Meanwhile in the Netherlands, Groningen booked a spot in next season’s Europa League following a 3-0 win in the second leg of their Europa League playoff against AZ Alkmaar. The first leg had ended goalless on Thursday.

And in Germany, Hamburg maintained their Bundesliga status courtesy of an away goals triumph over second division side Greuther Furth in a relegation/promotion playoff this evening.

Following a goalless first leg, Hamburg took an early lead in the second leg through Pierre-Michel Lassoga’s 14th minute header and though Stephan Furst equalised for Greuther Furth, Hamburg held on for the draw and avoid being relegated from the Bundesliga for the first time ever.
