Lewis Hamilton led team mate Nico Rosberg home by 2.2s in Montreal on Sunday as Mercedes dominated the Formula 1 Grand Prix du Canada 2015. Valtteri Bottas took Williams’ first podium of the year in third, albeit almost 40s down the road.

Starting from pole, Hamilton never lost the lead, except during his one and only pit stop. Nevertheless, Rosberg kept him honest throughout, with the world champion’s advantage rarely more than a couple of seconds. It was Hamilton’s fourth win in Canada and extends his championship lead to 17 points.

Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen had looked set for third place until a spin exiting the hairpin cost him time and meant compatriot Bottas was able to leapfrog ahead for the final podium place.

Team mate Sebastian Vettel, meanwhile, drove a superb race to come from 18th on the grid to finish fifth and Felipe Massa, 15th at the start for Williams, also stormed through the field to take sixth ahead of Lotus’s Pastor Maldonado, who scored his best result of the year in seventh.

Eighth went to the Force India of Nico Hulkenberg, while Red Bull’s Daniil Kvyat came home ninth ahead of Romain Grosjean’s Lotus. Grosjean had been running a strong fifth, before inexplicably cutting across the Marussia of Will Stevens coming into the final chicane. Despite contact, both men were able to continue after pitting, and Grosjean subsequently had five seconds added to his race time for the misdemeanour.

Both McLarens were forced to retire with technical issues, as was the Marussia of Roberto Merhi.
