Two men — Ado Idris and Hashimu Mohammed — are to spend three years each in jail for stealing a motorcycle valued at N350,000, a Jos Upper Area Court sitting in Kasuwan Nama ruled on Monday.

The duo of Idris and Mohammed was tried for theft and receiving stolen property.

The judge, Mr Yahaya Mohammed, handed down the sentence after the duo pleaded guilty to the two-count charge.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Mohammed, however, gave the convicts an option of N30,000 fine each.

Earlier, the Police Prosecutor, Sgt. Ibrahim Gokwat, told the court that a man, Salisu Adams, reported the incident at the Barkin-Ladi
Police Station on May 10.

Gokwat said that Idris stole the motorcycle and sold it to Mohammed, who resides at Mangu in Jos.

During police investigation, it was discovered that Idris sold the motorcycle to Mohammed for N77,000 without valid documents or receipt, the prosecutor said, according to the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN.

The offences contravened Sections 217 and 288 of the Penal Code, Laws of Northern Nigeria.
