Manchester United are out of the Capital One Cup after a shock fourth-round defeat to Middlesbrough on penalties.

After a frustrating 120 minutes of stalemate, the Reds scored only one spot-kick, through Andreas Pereira, as the Championship side claimed a famous scalp by winning 3-1 in the shoot-out.

Manager Louis Van Gaal attributed the loss to ill-luck.

“We are very disappointed. We could have finished so many of our chances so easily, and we didn’t do it, so it’s very disappointing.

“Last year, we were out of this cup already, in the first match, 4-0 [lost to Milton Keynes Dons]. Now we are in the final 16 and we had to win. But, okay, we were not lucky. I have to say you have to force the luck. Against Manchester City, we were also not lucky but I cannot repeat that every week that we’re not lucky. You have to force the luck.”

In contrast, Manchester City were so ruthless against premier league mates, Crystal Palace, punishing them 5-1.

The match at the Etihad Stadium saw a rampant Blues move into the Capital One Cup quarter-finals, inspired by the skilful Kelechi Iheanacho, who scored one and made a couple more in an excellent full debut.

Manuel Pellegrini made six changes from the side that drew 0-0 against United on Sunday, though the lengthy injury list meant wholesale rotation was out of the question.

Palace also fielded a strong starting XI with this competition clearly ranking highly in both team’s silverware wish-list.

While Manchester United have now to forget Capital One, Manchester City march on, their quarter final opponents now are Hull City.

In the other matches of the night, Liverpool recorded their first win under new coach, Jurgen Klopp, beating AFC Bournemouth 1-0. Southampton also knocked out struggling Aston Villa, 2-1.

Quarter-final pairings:

Middlesbrough v Everton
Southampton v Liverpool
Stoke City v Sheffield Wednesday
Manchester City v Hull City

*Quarter-Final ties are to be played during the week commencing 30th November 2015.
