Christian Benteke scored the only goal of the game as Tim Sherwood’s Aston Villa eased their relegation fears with a 1-0 win away at Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League on Saturday.

The result saw Sherwood get the better of a team he managed last season, as Villa went six points clear of the relegation zone riding on the recent good form of Benteke.

The Belgian forward has scored eight goals in his last six Premier League matches and four in his last two matches.

For Spurs however, the result dealt a big blow to their slim hopes of finishing in a UEFA Champions League position, with the Lilywhites dropping to seventh spot on the league table with 54 points, behind Liverpool on goal difference and two points behind Southampton in fifth place.

Liverpool host a struggling Newcastle United on Sunday while Southampton took full advantage of the result at White Hart Lane by getting a 2-0 win at home to Hull City on Saturday.

A goalless first half at St. Mary’s made way for first goals for a couple of players, with James Ward-Prowse scoring his first in the league with a penalty conceded by Alex Bruce for a foul on former Hull striker Shane Long 10 minutes into the second half.

Hull came close to an equaliser when James Chester saw his header cleared off the line, but Southampton sealed the win in the closing stages through Grazianno Pellé with his first league goal of the year.

Elsewhere in the Premier League on Saturday, Jonjo Shelvey’s penalty early in the second half earned Swansea City a 1-1 draw at home to Everton while Marko Arnautovic scored five minutes into injury time to give Stoke City a share of the spoils in a 1-1 draw at West Ham United.
