Swansea City striker Bafetimbi Gomis had to be stretchereď off early in the 3-2 loss at League Cup finalists Tottenham Hotspur while Ashley Young struck late to give Manchester United a 1-0 win at Newcastle United.

Gomis suddenly collapsed while the other players prepared to restart the match after Nacer Chadli had fired Tottenham Hotspur ahead in the seventh minute.

The French striker is now in stable condition according to Swansea boss Gary Monk, having received treatment on the field for about five minutes before being stretchered off the field with an oxygen mask on.

A statement from Swansea after the match read, “It is something we have been aware of – it is something called a vasovagal condition. We have always been aware of it and it has happened before. He has had all the medical and cardiology tests with us.”

Meanwhile on the pitch, Ki Sung-Yeung equalised after 20 minutes, scoring from a tight angle after Gylfi Sigurðsson’s initial long range effort came off the post.

Goals from Ryan Mason and Andros Townsend however gave Spurs a two-goal cushion and rendered Sigurðsson’s late goal back for Swansea a mere consolation.

The result saw Spurs – with a game in hand – go within two points of sixth placed Southampton and six points off fourth spot currently occupied by Man. United.

The Red Devils had Young to thank as the English midfielder capitalised on poor defending from Newcastle to score the winner in the 89th minute.

The match also witnessed Argentine midfielder Jonas Gutierrez make a first Premier League appearance in over a year after recovering from cancer.

The win for Man. United kept Louis van Gaal’s men a point and a place behind Arsenal that held on for a 2-1 win at Queens Park Rangers in another Premier League match.

Following a goalless first half at Loftus Road, Giroud scored his fifth goal in five matches to put Arsenal in front just after the hour mark.

Alexis Sanchez then went from provider to scorer minutes later to double Arsenal’s advantage in the London derby.

A Charlie Austin strike seven minutes from time ensured a nervous ending which the Gunners saw out to remain in third place, four points behind second placed Man. City.
