After a screening exercise that lasted for 15 minutes at the Kwara State House of Assembly on Tuesday, Justice Sulaiman Kawu, the nominee of the state governor, Abdulfatah Ahmed, was confirmed by the state legislators as the state’s new Chief Justice.

Kawu’s nomination by the governor follows the retirement of Justice Ayinla Bamigbola as the Chief Judge of the state on Friday.

In a letter to the House last Wednesday, the governor had said Kawu had been recommended by the National Judicial Council for the appointment adding that this was in line with section 271 (1) of the 1999 Constitution as amended.

The Majority Leader of the House, Alhaji Abdulkareem Abdulganiyu, moved a motion that Kawu should take a bow and leave the floor of the House after he was asked a few questions stressing that his motion was necessary in view of Kawu’s track record in the administration of justice.

His motion was seconded by the Chairman, House Committee on Ethics, Privileges, Public Services and Judiciary, Mr Kamaldeen Fagbemi.

The Speaker of the House, Razak Atunwa, while announcing the confirmation, directed the Clerk, Oyetunde Oyeniyi, to inform the governor of the confirmation.
