Aminu Tambuwal, the speaker of Nigeria’ House of Representatives is still consulting about his political future and will only make any decision on it public at the end of the consultations, Iman Iman, media aide to the speaker said on Monday.

He was reacting to speculations in the media that the Speaker may dump the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, the platform on which he was elected to the lower chamber for the opposition All Progressives Congress, APC on Tuesday.

It has long be rumoured that the Speaker will contest the presidency in the 2015 elections on the platform of APC.

Reports over the weekend had indicated that the Speaker has concluded his nationwide consultations and may defect to APC as early as tomorrow when the House will resume plenary.

“I am still consulting my primary constituency on these crucial matters which affect me, Sokoto State and Nigeria generally. I will come back and engage my people. All politics is local and I will make my final stand on these topical issues known to Nigerians at the most appropriate time,” the Speaker had replied to questions on his political future, especially rumours that he will contest the presidency on the platform of APC when recently asked reporters.

Already, the APC has fixed its presidential primaries for 2 December for the election that will take place on February 14, 2015.

The sale of nomination forms to presidential aspirants on the platform of the opposition party is expected to begin on October 20 and end on November 6, while screening of presidential aspirants is slated to take place between November 10 and 13, and November 14 and 15 will be for appeals.

The party’s national convention, where the presidential candidate will be picked, holds on December 2.

Analysts said with the release of the timetable, Tambuwal may no longer have the luxury of dithering if indeed he intended to contest the 2015 presidency.

Already, the PDP has endorsed President Goodluck Jonathan as its candidate for the 2015 presidential election.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Head of State, General Muhammadu Buhari and Rabiu Kwankwaso, the Governor of Kano State are the three leading aspirants already canvassing support of party members across the country to be given the opportunity to fly the APC presidential flag in the 2015 election.

It is believed that the Speaker has the support of Governor Aliyu Wamakko of Sokoto State who is regarded as his godfather in his ambition to contest the presidency.

Governor Wamakko was one of the five governors that defected to the APC from PDP late last year.

And it has been speculated that the Speaker will follow the footstep of the Governor with whom he still maintains a cordial relation.

This is aside the fact that Tambuwal maintains cordial relations with other leaders of APC.

We gathered that a key consideration in the defection of the Speaker is whether he will be able to retain his position in the House currently dominated by the ruling PDP which has always viewed his association with APC with suspicion.

It was gathered that Tambuwal may honourably resign as Speaker if he decided to go ahead with his defection to APC on Tuesday.

But the media aide to the Speaker insisted in an interview on Monday that reports about defection of the Tambuwal are mere speculations.

Iman said the Speaker has not set any date or taken any decision on jumping from PDP to APC.

The Speaker’s future political direction, he said will only be revealed at the end of his ongoing consultations.

Despite the denial, all eyes will be on Tambuwal in the next few days as Nigerians keenly watch his next political move.
