President Goodluck Jonathan will lead a delegation to participate in the 69th Session of the UN General Assembly, expected to focus on implementing a Transformative Post-2015 Development Agenda.

The debate of the Assembly will begin on Wednesday, Sept. 24, to Wednesday, Oct. 1, Amb. John Ejinaka, the Director, International Section of the Nigeria Mission, told newsmen in New York on Thursday.

He said Jonathan would take part in other high-level thematic debates, focusing on implementing the new development agenda and on how to mobilise resources.

Other areas of discussion include; advancing gender equality and empowerment of women in post-2015 development agenda and strengthening cooperation between the UN and regional organisations.

Ejinaka also said that the President would join in other high-level events on combating climate change, the myriad of devastating crises, human dignity, the rule of law and the principles of the UN Charter.

He said Nigeria would also call for a more effective global action and implementation of all existing international protocols against terrorism and violent extremism.

According to him, Jonathan will also be actively involved in a meeting with the UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki-Moon, to highlight the urgent needs and required response to Ebola outbreak in West Africa.

The envoy said Nigeria would strongly pursue the goal of general and complete disarmament.

As far back as the early 1960s, he said Nigeria was in the forefront of the opposition to the nuclear proliferation, and took a principled stand on nuclear tests in Africa.

Nigeria’s early ratification of the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) was a testimony to that long-standing commitment to building a nuclear weapon-free world, he said.

He said Nigeria would be pushing for Security Sector Reform (SSR) and that Jonathan would be having private meetings with the UN Secretary-General, the British Prime Minister, David Cameron, among others.

Jonathan would be accompanied by the Ministers of Finance, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala; Foreign Affairs, Amb. Bashir Wali, Industry, Trade and Investment, Olusegun Aganga and Women Affairs and Social Development, Hajiya Zainab Maina.

Jonathan will be among 140 Heads of State and Government that will address the Assembly in its renovated West Wing Hall.

Jonathan will be the eighth president to speak during the afternoon session on Sept. 24, after Mongolian president, Tsakhiagiin Elbegdor.
