Stoke City goalkeeper Asmir Begovic has entered the latest edition of the Guinness Book of World Records for ‘longest goal scored in football’ for his goal against Southampton in a Premier League match last season.

Begovic scored the goal 13 seconds into the match last November, when his clearance went the length of the Britannia Stadium pitch and bounced just outside the Southampton penalty area before going over opposing keeper Artur Boruc into goal.

The Bosnia international stated after being awarded that ”I feel amazing to be honoured in this way and as a goalkeeper I didn’t expect this to happen, not for this type of record anyway – I will take it though and enjoy it.”

He added ”I really do appreciate this award, and the certificate will certainly take pride of place on the wall at home. So thank you to everyone at Guinness World Records for presenting me with this wonderful award.”

The goal, scored in very windy conditions, was measured at 91.9 metres or 301 feet and 6 inches.

Also in the 60th edition of record book is the match between Atletico Claypole and Victoriano in Argentina which witnessed 36 red cards shown to each player – starting and substitutes – of both sides.

Cristiano Ronaldo is also in the record book for ‘Most Champions League goals in a calendar year’ after scoring 15 goals during 2013, whilst he also recorded the ‘Most Twitter followers for an athlete’ which is now in excess of 25 million.
