In Gaza, 1,766 Palestinians have been killed and another 9,320 wounded since the start of the Israeli offensive, emergency services spokesman Ashraf al-Qudra said in an update at 1220 GMT.

Figures released by the UN humanitarian agency OCHA, which were correct as at 1200 GMT on August 2 gave a total of 1,525 dead.

Of the 1,196 killed whose identities could be verified, 1,033 were civilians, nearly 84 percent, OCHA said. The number includes 329 children and 187 women.

Of the Palestinians killed, 191 were members of armed groups.

On the other side, 66 Israelis have been killed, including 64 soldiers, all of whom have died since the ground offensive began. Most have died in fighting in southern Gaza but others were killed by militants who managed to infiltrate southern Israel.

Among them is a soldier who was believed captured during an ambush in southern Gaza but who was declared dead by the army on August 2. Another 1,520 soldiers have been admitted to hospitals since the conflict began.

Two Israeli civilians have been killed by cross-border rocket fire, which also claimed the life of a Thai agricultural worker.

DISPLACED

OCHA says up to 475,000 people are believed displaced, among them 259,321 who are sheltering in 90 schools run by the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA). Another 200,000 people are believed to be staying with host families, while thousands more are sheltering in government schools.

ROCKETS

According to army figures as at 1200 GMT, militants since July 8 have fired 3,160 rockets, of which 2,483 hit Israel while 559 were intercepted by its Iron Dome anti-missile defences.

STRIKES

Israel says it has struck 4,626 targets across the Gaza Strip in the 27-day operation.

DESTRUCTION

At least 12 hospitals have been damaged since the start of the conflict, of which five have been closed down. Fourteen primary health clinics have also been damaged and 34 out of Gaza’s 75 clinics have been shut down, OCHA says.

And nearly 900 houses have been totally destroyed or severely damaged, it says.
