Blessing Okagbare has won the 100 metres gold for Nigeria in the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.
She sprinted home in 10.85 seconds, a games record, beating a star-studded field, including Jamaica’s Veronica Campbell-Brown and Kerron Stewart.
The Jamaican duo, Campbell-Brown and Kerron Stewart took silver and bronze with a time of 11.03 and 11.07sec respectively.
Her victory in the race this night triggered jubilation in the Nigerian corner.
The star athlete herself went wild with joy, after finding that she had clinched the coveted gold. She ran round and then removed her shoes, before she went to collect the Nigerian colours to drape herself with.
Okagbare won long jump silver and 200m bronze at the 2013 world championships.
In the men’s 100 metres, Jamaican Kemar Bailey-Cole won the gold
In the absence of Usain Bolt, Bailey-Cole clocked 10.00 seconds at Hampden Park.
England’s Adam Gemili claimed silver in 10.10sec, with another Jamaican, Nickel Ashmeade taking bronze (10.12) in a tight finish.
