Host nation of the 2014 FIFA World Cup, Brazil have released a list of their final 23-man squad for the competition today with a few surprise inclusions while AC Milan midfielder Kaká is among a number of prominent names missing from the list.

The five-time world champions called up four home-based players; goalkeepers Jefferson and Victor as well as strikers Fred and Jô while Inter Milan midfielder Hernanes is a slightly surprising inclusion to the final squad.

Kaká’s exclusion could mean the end of his time with the national team after 87 appearances, the last of which came in the friendly match against Russia in March 2013.

The exclusion of veterans Ronaldinho of Atlético Mineiro and Robinho of AC Milan could also spell the end of the duo’s time with the national team.

Also not part of the World Cup squad is Liverpool duo Philippe Coutinho and Lucas Leiva despite featuring prominently in the English club’s push for the Premier League title this season.

Paris St. Germain duo Lucas Moura and Marquinhos also missed out on the list as did Tottenham Hotspur’s Sandro, Manchester United full-back Rafael as well as Atletico Madrid duo Miranda and Felipe Luis who both have been integral in the Spanish side’s impressive season.

Brazil, who won the FIFA Confederations Cup with a similar squad, will be looking to build on that triumph and win a sixth World Cup title having last won it in 2002 Japan-Korea World Cup.

The Selaçao will begin their campaign at the World Cup in Group A with the opening match against Croatia on June 12, with Cameroun and Mexico the other nations that make up the group.
