Former Governor of Kano state, Malam Ibrahim Shekarau, and former Senator representing Kano North Senatorial District, Senator Bello Hayyatu, have defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressive Congress (APC).
Shekarau and Hayyatu resigned their membership of PDP earlier on Sunday.
Speaking after accepting the decision of his political group, the Shura Council, over the defection, Shekarau said: “We weighed several options after realizing that PDP has permanently crashed as a political party, and the decision to join APC came as the fifth option that we agreed to adopt.”
Shekarau added that the decision to join the APC was overwhelmingly supported by all his political group and followers.
“We have fervently prayed, deliberated on our movements and made serious contacts, talked to everybody, so we have finally accepted and agreed to defect to the APC, which is today the best party that cares for Nigerians,” Shekarau said.
He explained that on their journey out of the PDP, they had looked at all the parties one after the other, and that ADC, which came just two months ago, cannot be trusted as a Party to join, for several reasons.
“We cannot rely on ADC, a party filled with people of personal interests, a party struggling to get its feet, a party facing huge legal problems, and a party that is having its leaders struggling for positions,” he added.

Also speaking, Bello Hayyatu noted that the recent bye elections held in Ekiti and Ondo States, with PDP not featuring clearly, showed that the party had permanently fallen into a deep ditch.
He said: “For the fact that the PDP during the bye elections could not even make the INEC list and couldn’t participate in the conduct of the election shows that continued stay in it is a risk, and so we decided that defection is the best option.
“So after that we weighed all the Nigerian parties, and we finally arrived at APC, together with Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau and all others we are taking this last decision with.”
Governor Yusuf elated as Shekarau joins APC
Kano state Governor, Engr. Abba Kabir Yusuf has expressed joy over the defection of Shekarau, from the PDP to APC. Governor Yusuf warmly welcomed former Governor and Senator Shekarau into the APC, describing his return as a major boost to the party’s strength in the state.
This was contained in a statement signed by the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Mustapha Muhammad, on Sunday.
Governor Yusuf stated that a date will soon be fixed, in consultation with the national secretariat of the party, for the formal reception of the former Governor into the APC fold.
He noted that the party in Kano continues to witness growing support and consolidation, positioning itself as the most dominant political force in the state.
The Governor added that APC remains battle-ready to win all elective positions in the forthcoming elections, citing unity and strategic alignments as key factors driving the party’s confidence.
He further assured party members and supporters that the leadership is committed to strengthening internal cohesion and expanding its grassroots base across the state.
