Kano state government, Journalists Against Polio (JAP), and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), on Friday, agreed to enter into partnership with other relevant organizations to tackle the resurgence of polio variants in the state.
The Kano state Deputy Health Education Officer, Auwal D. Ibrahim, said the state Ministry of Health, under the leadership of Dr. Abubakar Yusuf Labaran, is fully prepared to partner with JAP, UNICEF and other development partners to tackle the menace of polio in the state.
Ibrahim stated this during the Partnership Reactivation Meeting with JAP held at the headquarters of UNICEF, Kano Field Office.
He urged JAP members to put in their best towards ensuring that polio is fully eradicated in the state, while assuring full support and partnership by Kano state government.
In his brief remarks, the Chief of Kano UNICEF Field Office, Rahama Rihood Mohammed, appealed to JAP members in Kano, Katsina and Jigawa states to view the meeting as very crucial.
According to him, “what we are discussing today is very important for the total eradication of polio in the North West and across Nigeria.
“Your roles as JAP members are very crucial. You are here to help us because community awareness is key to the eradication of polio in North West and across Nigeria.
“The polio vaccine is free. It is protective. So, we need the wisdom, the advise, the expertise, and the inputs of JAP members to succeed.”
During the meeting, JAP members were advised to ensure awareness creation, resolution of non-compliance in communities, tracking and dispelling of rumours, vaccine insistence, harmful cultural practice reduction, championship, inspiring stories, and visibility by the influencers and CRGS for immunization.
