Following days of unchecked robbery and harassment of innocent citizens in Bunu district of Kabba-Bunu Local Government, Kogi State, daring gunmen masquerading as Fulani herders continued their orgy of violence with the killing of a recently married man on his farm in Aiyetoro Kiri on Thursday.
The victim, Mr Durojaiye Folusho, described as a security-conscious and hardworking person, had gone to the farm on the outskirts of the community for some work when an unknown number of criminals attacked and killed him. His corpse was recovered and taken to Kabba.
It was gathered that Durojaiye, aka Qiality, was a notable transporter whose vehicles regularly ply Kiri to Kabba and vice versa daily. He picked a new wife from a nearby Local Government Area in April and usually avoided moving alone or in the dark.
A source said armed men have been on the rampage across Bunuland of late. On Wednesday, a day before Durojaiye’s gruesome murder, they were said to have operated unhindered in Aiyetoro Kiri, robbing, kidnapping, and dispensing terrorism against their victims.
The Kogi State Government says it has commenced an immediate manhunt for the killers. In a statement signed by Kingsley Femi Fanwo, the Commissioner for Information and Communications, in Lokoja on Friday, the government condemned the killing, describing it as senseless and tragic.
While extending condolences to the bereaved family, the people of Ayetoro Kiri, and the entire Kabba/Bunu area, the government said the state security adviser has been directed to beef up security in the area and reaffirmed that the safety of citizens remains a top priority.
Fanwo urged members of the public to remain calm, cooperate with security operatives, and provide credible information that could aid in tracking down the suspects and averting similar incidents.
The Commissioner assured the state government’s unwavering commitment to peace, security, and the rule of law across the state.
It would be recalled that on the 15th of July, or thereabout, the state government announced the arrest of three criminal informants, Babatunde Aledare, Dare Okegbe, and
Lakutu Omoba Ajelesimi all from Bunuland. They were alleged to have been giving information about their own people to suspected Fulani kidnappers.
