Mock battle: Oba of Benin defeats enemy warriors

Troops loyal to the Benin Monarch, Oba Ewuare II, have defeated their enemies who attempted to launch an attack against the Benin Kingdom.

The mock battle which was fought with bows, arrows and shields during Ugie-Iron traditional rites at the 2024 Igue festival, was a reenactment of the historic battle between Esigie of blessed memory and Uzama Chiefs in the 15th century AD.

The Queens (Iloi) of Oba Ewuare II had bid farewell at the point of departure from the Benin Royal court to Ughaerhoba—the venue for the mock battle.

Leading the royal troops in the battle of supremacy was Chief Bright Osaro Edogun, the Edogun of Benin, who fought against Uzama Chiefs, led by Chief Edionwe Oliha, the Oliha of Benin.

The royal battle began when the Oba troops inquired from the Uzama Chiefs what their mission was.

After the conquest, the enemy warriors surrendered to the Oba of Benin and paid tributes to him, and thereafter received kola nuts from the Oba.

Chief Edogun who was supported by Isienmwenro (Royal Guards), stung the Oba enemies, led by the Obadolaye of Benin, Chief Victor Osa Uzamere and Chief Oliha, took turns to make presentations, amid jubilation.

The Uzama Chiefs had needed victory to erase their career defeat after the first battle, recorded in the 15th century AD, was lost.

Palace functionaries, including Chiefs and members of the Benin Royal family, were present at the Ugie-iron cultural event.
