“J12’s Transition: An Afrobeats EP Rooted in Vulnerability, Desire, and Sonic Growth”

For a very long time, music has served as a tool and medium for self-expression, confession, and regret. Babajide Olumide Olowoyeye, stage-named J12, is an Afrobeats singer and songwriter known for his unbridled creativity and remarkable ability to seamlessly convey both thoughts and emotions. He is a rare and exceptional bundle of musical talent who mastered the very core of sound and style, leveraging such skill and forging new ground in the music realm.

These abilities he has masterfully garnered to create the EP titled TRANSITION, which features 4 authentic and heartfelt tracks: “Yanriyan,” “Money,” “Dey Play,” and “Try.”

Yanriyan, the opening track in the EP, is a rare experimentation of both lyricism and imagery. In this song J12 masterfully presents his romantic pursuit and experience with a stranger he holds interest in, “Tolani.” He carefully paints the encounter detail by detail, expressing his intrigue towards the very sight of her appearance, her enticing and hypnotic hold over him, and his longing urge to win her over.

Comparing her countenance with the sweetness of chocolate, he dares to charm her in a witty and romantic manner. In Yanriyan, he not only delivers excellent vocals, but he also flexes his revered narrative style, flaunting his ability to lace imagery with musicality. Yanriyan is a clear narration of his romantic pursuit of a strange lady whose interest captivates him and his attempt at “shooting his shot,” making advances towards her.

“Money” is the following track on the EP, a sincere plea for wealth in the midst of his relentless hustle and grind. He introduces the song with a drift from the regular J12, this time wearing a music style similar to Asake’s before returning to his unique touch.

His lyrics carry weight as he recounts his unwavering efforts and devotion to the resilient hustle, calling and praying to God for the blessing of wealth and riches. The track thrives on a strong delivery of Amapiano as he reenacts his hunger and thirst for the gift of wealth (money) in the second verse. Success is his heartcry, and music is the weapon with which he conquers obstacles. Money is a standout track on the EP, as it weighs significantly strong on the delivery of Amapiano.

“Dey Play” is a deep appreciation for the female gender, similar to the previous “Yanriyan” track; however, it carries more intentionality and vulnerability.

He begins with a sincere mood, calling her “omoge,” a word of endearment common with the Yoruba tribe. He admires her physicality. “Let me have a taste of your body,” he says, demonstrating a bold attempt at wooing her. However, this attempt is without haste, as he prefers a sincere acceptance and compliance from her, without coercion or force. In the chorus “girl I no dey play with your love oh yeah,” he expresses sincerity in his affection for her and goes further to underline that only she can truly satisfy his desires. The song ends with a soft melody, rooted in affection for the lady, playing slightly silently as a background beat.

“Dey play” is yet another track that establishes J12’s sincerity and self awareness with music, and how seamlessly he makes his emotions known to his audience.

The last entry on the EP is titled “Try.” With its fast-paced and energy-filled beat, it is yet another attempt at J12’s musical versatile nature. The song thrives on a heavy fusion of Amapiano sounds and an irresistible melody, a song perfect for party time.

In “Try” he dares to challenge the differences that may obstruct love and tries his luck at love at the expense of whatever the result may be. He carefully persuades his lover to risk experiencing love: “Baby, can we try?” He paints love as a risk worth taking and remains in pursuit of his lover. “You are made specially for me,” he proclaims his belief in his choice of love. Overall, “Try” is a much more confident and direct confession of love and affection.

In TRANSITION, J12 hasn’t just come to experiment his mastery of sound and style he has proven to be a temple that houses sensations and yearnings,wielding music as an instrument of affection, restraint, adoration and reverence ,hunger and thirst.

J12 has created a vivid image and atmosphere of attachment and devotion. The EP is a direct confession of desire and vulnerability, a thoughtful blend of sound and sentiments crafted from intentionality and genuity. It succeeds in etching an uncommon experience of affection and desire.
