The University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) says it has tackled the outbreak of Yellow fever Edo.
Prof. Darlington Obaseki, the Chief Medical Director (CMD) of the hospital, disclosed this to newsmen on Wednesday, during the hospital’s staff award ceremony/end of year party in Benin.
Darlington said UBTH has particularly provided vaccines free-of-charge and also deployed community health personnel to curtail the ailment in several affected communities across the state.
He applauded the prompt response of the hospital personnel for tackling the ailment in the wake of the outbreak.
The CMD added that the hospital had provided free vaccines to staff, students and the general public in its commitment to saving lives.
“In UBTH, we have provided treatment for about 20 to 30 patients that were brought in from communities mostly affected by the Yellow fever outbreak in the state.
“The hospital also opened isolation ward where Yellow fever patients were attended to.
“Our community Health/Medicine Department joined with support from the Edo State government and World Health Organisation (WHO) who sent workforce to the epicentre in villages worst hit by the outbreak to help curtail the spread of the disease,’’ he said.
The chief medical director explained that the vaccination was a continuous exercise, but the available vaccine may attract a token as the period for free vaccination has elapsed.
