Man, 23. in court for allegedly stabbing uncle

A 23-year-old man, Nnamdi Ayanedum, was on Monday brought before an Apapa Chief Magistrates’ Court for allegedly stabbing his uncle, Chijoke Ayanedum, several times with a broken bottle.

The accused, a resident of Ajegunle area of Apapa in Lagos, is facing a charge of assault, to which he pleaded not guilty.

The prosecutor, Insp. Ferdinand Asu, told the court that the accused committed the offence on Dec. 8 at their residence.

Asu alleged that the accused assaulted the complainant by stabbing him many times with a broken bottle.

He said that a fight had ensued between the duo, while efforts made by neighbours to settle it was unsuccessful.

“The accused just kept on stabbing his uncle with the broken bottle,” the prosecutor said.

The prosecutor said that the offence contravened Section 173 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 173 prescribes a three-year jail term for anyone convicted for assault occasioning harm.

Chief Magistrate Michael Olubi granted the accused bail in the sum of N50,000, with one surety in like sum.

Olubi fixed further hearing in the case for Jan.14, 2019.
