It is no longer news that Governor Ibrahim Dankwambo of Gombe State will, on June 24, receive the honor of HoG Governor of the Year during its 8th Annual Session holding in Ikeja. The HoG Governor of the Year Award, like many know, is the highest award bestowed on any sitting governor and a mark of exemplary and purposeful leadership in Nigeria. What many do not know is the reason for the choice of Dakwambo for this all-important honor, particularly because the HoG Awards have a penchant for honoring very few individuals in the nation.
In one interview, the Managing Director of the Awards, Mr. Rupert Ojenuwa gave an insight: “The HoG Awards honor very few individuals because we have a vibrant Board of Custodians who scrutinize everything and by so doing only very few make it to the nomination level where approvals have been gathered”. But, why is the HoG honoring Ibrahim Dankwambo?
In one of the releases by the HoG Awards, it was gathered that the Gombe governor was penciled for the Awards because of his consistency in delivery of democracy dividends in Gombe. As contained in a release signed by Ojenuwa, the Gombe State governor has distinguished himself and raised the bar for public service delivery. The statement reads:
“There is hardly a week that pass without an inspection of project in Gombe. Dakwambo has raised the bar in performance in governance. He has worked extremely hard to enlist Gombe as one of the modern states in Nigeria. In every corner of Gombe, if he isn’t constructing road, he is building a bridge and if he isn’t building a bridge, he is renovating or constructing an hospital. I think this is what governance should be.
“We are particularly glad to have him as the Governor of the Year because his consistency in delivery is phenomenal and can be verified. All you need to do is take a trip to Gombe and the fact stares you in the face.
“Nigeria is faced with infrastructural deficits which litter abundantly. Governance is a call to service and to register one’s name on the good books of posterity. We think that Dakwambo is the architect of modern Gombe and the good people of Gombe should be proud of him” the statement concludes.
The HoG Awards has over the years carved a niche and made a name for itself. It has continued to encourage purposeful leadership by celebrating and honoring deserving Nigerians. Some of those who have been honored by the Awards include: Alh. Atiku Abubakar, Alh. Aliko Dangote, Dr. Akinwunmi Adeshina, Capt Idris Wada, Sen..Kwakwanso, Otunba Gbenga Daniel, Babatunde Fashola and other distinguished Nigerians.
The HoG Awards this year will be honoring Atiku Abubakar, Ibrahim Dakwambo, Bukola Saraki, Ben Bruce and Shehu Sani for exemplary leadership in Nigeria. The event will hold at the Summit in Alausa, Lagos.
