Kebbi donates N20m to war veterans

The Kebbi Government has donated N20 million to the state’s chapter of Nigerian legionnaires’ emblem launching and appeal fund to mark the 2018 armed forces remembrance day.

The Deputy Governor, Alhaji Samaila Yombe, who represented Gov. Atiku Bagudu at the emblem appeal fund in Birnin Kebbi on Friday made the donation.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that members of the state executive council, permanent secretaries, advisers, top functionaries and other donors donated a total of N1.1 million.

Gov. Bagudu called on the public to support war veterans to improve their standards of living, stressing that they spent their youthful days to ensure peace and unity in the country.

He said the challenges facing legionnaires would be resolved to enable them to support efforts to ensure peaceful coexistence in the country.

Amaru Ambursa, the acting Chairman of the state chapter of Nigerian legionnaires, urged
government to improve the standard of living of families of deceased soldier and the war veterans.

He also called for provision of a secretariat for the legionnaires, a vehicle that would be used to generate revenue, sponsorship of legionnaires to religious pilgrimages and deployment to assist security agencies in community policing.

A second world war veteran, Aliyu Baso, said the families of fallen heroes and veterans needed support for their past roles to ensure peace and unity in the country.
