No fewer than 185 resident doctors across the West African countries are undergoing a two-week intensive training at the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH), Ilorin.

According to the Newsh Agency of Nigeria, NAN, Dr Peter Adeoye, the course Coordinator, made this known to newsmen on the sidelines of the programme organised by the West African College of Surgeons in Ilorin on Tuesday.

The West African College of Surgeons is a professional organisation that promotes education, training, examinations and research in surgery in Africa.

Adeoye said that the programme was to develop more professional surgeons to world class standard.

He said that the training was aimed at exposing participants to specialised aspects of surgery through lectures and practical work.

“This is a yearly programme of the West African College of Surgeons that produces surgeons in various specialised areas in West African sub-region.

“UITH is hosting this training for the first time and it is a two-week intensive programme that touches on every aspect of the surgery,” he said.

Adeoye said that such programme would go a long way in eradicating the possibilities of complication during surgical operations.

He said that surgery could only be a life-saving intervention where the provision of surgical services was professionally carried out by well trained doctors.

“This training is very much relevant to the resident doctors and that is why we at the college attached much importance to it.

“Resident doctors are doctors aspiring to be fellows, specialists and consultants in the field of surgery,” he said.
