Governor Tanko Al-Makura of Nasarawa State

In its bid to complement the efforts of Nasarawa state government to improve education in rural areas, the Youth Wing of Mada Development Association (MDA), has decided to engage private teachers.

National President of the association, Mr Gyuni Umaru, who made the disclosure on Friday in Akwanga, expressed dissatisfaction at the quality of majority of school leavers in Mada communities.

He told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the association would engage the teachers under its Rural Educational Initiative Programme (REIP) in English Language, Mathematics and Science.

“In most communities in our area, students who finish secondary school can neither speak English fluently nor read at all.

“So, we want to employ English Language, Mathematics and Science teachers to encourage our students to take interest in the study of science.

“We would screen the candidates to be employed to ensure that those employed by the government under the N-Power are not included, ” he added.

Umaru explained that the association would carry out the recruitment in partnership with Majalisan Macido Andaha, a non-governmental organisation (NGO).

He said the association had already set up a committee to work out modalities for the inauguration of the programme in September.

Umaru said the committee would be charged with the responsibility of paying the teachers stipends.

He said the association would embark on other programmes that would empower the youths and boost commercial activities in the area.

He identified poor electricity supply, inadequate water supply and insecurity as challenges slowing down commercial activities in the area.

Umaru urged the youths in the area to shun social vices by undertaking gainful activities.
