Mother, daughter die in another Lagos building collapse

A collapsed building  claimed the lives of a mother and her daughter while they were washing cloth under an uncompleted building in Seidu Ekeleji Street, Alaro, Meiran, Lagos on Saturday afternoon.

Although, another daughter was rescued live from the scene, the mother and older daughter were brought out dead from rumbles.

The building, which was still under construction was in decking position when it collapsed.

The mother and her two daughters, aged, 4 years and 2 years, according to neighbours, were washing cloth when the building collaped, killing the mother and the 2 year old daughters.

Officials of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Rapid Response Squad and LASAMBUS were at the scene to offer rescue services.

Speaking on the incident, LASEMA said it received a distress call concerning a collapsed building which prompted it to immediately activate its Emergency Response to the scene of the incident.

Adebayo Kehinde of Public Affairs Unit, LASEMA said investigation conducted by the Agency at scene of the incident revealed that an existing uncompleted bungalow under construction with sands and concrete block seen on the deck suddenly caved in with three people trapped under the rubbles.

“The prompt response by emergency responders led to the rescue of 5 years old girl identified as Moyin, who was immediately moved to General Hospital Ikeja by the Lagos State Ambulance Service, while two persons, 30- year- old- mother identified as Basirat and another daughter identified as Bisoye were both recovered dead and were move to the Mortuary by the State Environmental Monitoring Health Monitoring Unit SEHMU.

“The Agency’s LASEMA Response Unit and the Fire Unit, Lagos State Fire Services, Nigerian Police Force, LASAMBUS, RRS and Red Cross were responders present at the scene of the incident.”

He added that the General Manager LASEMA Mr Adesina Tiamiyu said proper investigation would be conducted on the incident by the appropriate Agencies even as he advised owners and developers of buildings in the State to adhere to building codes and physical planning laws of the State so as to advert unnecessary loss of lives.
