A 27-year-old man, Godwin Dikejora, who allegedly stole 1,511 litres of diesel worth N317, 310 belonging to his employer, was arraigned on Wednesday in Lagos.

He was, however, released on N200,000 bail with two sureties on the orders of an Apapa Magistrates’ Court.

According to Chief Magistrate Titus Abolarinwa, the sureties must be gainfully employed and should show evidence of two years’ tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

Dikejora , who pleaded not guilty to a two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing, resides at Olodi Apapa area of Lagos.

The prosecutor, Insp. Tony Elibeh had told the court that the accused committed the offences at Coconut area of Olodi Apapa, Lagos, on Nov. 14.

He said the accused, who was an employee of the complainant, Mr Chukwugbo Donatus, conspired with others now at large to steal 1,511 litres of diesel worth N317, 310.

Elibeh said that when Donatus discovered that the diesel was missing, he decided to confront Dikejora, who denied stealing the commodity.

“The accused became restless after he was confronted about the missing diesel and was looking for a way to escape.

“The complainant reported the case to the police and the accused was immediately arrested.”

The offences contravened Section 285 and 409 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 285 prescribes three-year jail term for stealing, while Section 409 prescribes two years for conspiracy.

The magistrate adjourned the case till March 13 for mention.
