Speed limit device: Edo FRSC arrest 186 motorists in 2 days

Operatives of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), in Edo State, have arrested 186 motorists in just two days, over their failure to install speed limiter device in their vehicles.

The State Sector Commander of FRSC, Mr. Samuel Odukoya, made this disclosure at the weekend while speaking with journalists in Benin.

He said the enforcement of the device, said it was done in collaboration with other security agencies in the state.

“The enforcement started February nationwide; and between February 1st and 2nd, we apprehended 186 motorists for not installing the device in their vehicles,” he said, adding that any motorist found guilty of violating the speed limiter order is liable to pay a fine of N3,000.

He further disclosed that they only arrest motorists after certifying that the vehicle doesn’t have the device.

“Once you are stopped, we demand for the certificate of installation; but if you can produce it, we check whether the device is installed in your vehicle or not, and if it is not, the vehicle would be apprehended and the driver has to pay the stipulated fine after facing mobile court,” he said.

He however advised motorists to collect their certificates after installing the device to save the FRSC the rigours of going through the internet to certify whether it was installed or not.

Odukoya who said that the major cause of accident on the highway was due to excessive speed, noted that with the speed limiter device, motorists would not be able to go on excessive speed, thereby reducing the rate of accidents on the roads.

While calling on motorists to always obey traffic laws and install the device, he appealed to the passengers to bear with FRSC in their attempt to enforce the speed limiter order which he said is for their safety.

“Some of the passages are not happy with us during the exercise. They think we are wasting their time. But what we are doing is in their best interest, so they should support and cooperate with FRSC to ensure the success of the exercise,” he said.
