Kogi Government said it had revoked the contract for the maintenance of Greater Lokoja Water Works by CGC, a Chinese firm, due to the N100 million monthly maintenance cost of the plant.

The state’s Commissioner for Water Resources, Mr Salami Ozigi, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), in Lokoja on Monday.

He said an Interim Technical Team had been put in place to oversee the plant.

Ozigi said it was unreasonable, unpatriotic and unsustainable for government to be spending such huge amount on water supply monthly for the state capital alone.

He added that the technical team would handle the running of the plant in the interim, noting that the governor had mandated the ministry to give the team the needed support for effective performance.

Ozigi said Gov. Yahaya Bello inspected and assessed the Water Works on Saturday and expressed satisfaction with what was on ground and the capability of the technical team.

The commissioner, who commended the residents for their support, assured the people that water scarcity in the capital city would soon be resolved.

“Government is discussing with the management of Abuja Electricity Distribution Company to improve power supply to the treatment plant for effective supply of potable water to the people of Lokoja and its environs.

“Our governor is committed to its promise to providing the necessary support for the ministry to ensure that the people of Lokoja get adequate potable water supply”, he said. (NAN)
