INEC to conclude rerun elections in Rivers State before end of July

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC in Rivers State says it would conclude the rerun election in the eight local government areas of the state between this month and the end of July.

The INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner Aniedi Ikoiwak announced this at a stakeholders meeting in Port Harcourt.

He said the commission would fix a specific date for the conclusion of the rerun elections whenever the political parties, candidates and other relevant stakeholders agree for a peaceful conclusion of the rerun election.

The INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner also assured that the results already collated from some polling units before the rerun elections were suspended have not been tampered by anybody.

In his remarks, the Chairman of the All Progressives Congress in Rivers State Davies Ikanya said INEC candidates who benefited from election violence should not be allowed to occupy public offices.

For his part, the candidate of the PDP in the Rivers East Senatorial District rerun election Senator George Sekibo said the PDP and the Rivers State Government were not involve in violence in the suspended rerun election and will not be involve in violence in the proposed rescheduled rerun elections.

Stakeholders in attendance at the INEC meeting cut across representatives of political parties, representatives of the Rivers State Commissioner of Police, the Brigade Commander of 2 Brigade of the Nigeria Army in Rivers State, Heads of Paramilitary in Rivers State, the state Director of the National Orientation Agency and representatives of Alternative Dispute Resolution Organizations.
