The Association of Nigerian Electricity Distributors (ANED) says the paramilitary is owing the Distribution Companies (DISCOs) N24.1 billion from 2013 to February, bringing the total owed them by Federal government ministries and the army to N80 billion.
Mr Sunday Oduntan, the Executive Director of ANED, said this on Monday in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja.
He said paramilitary owed Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) N 7.7 billion; Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) N3.4 billion; Eko Distribution Company (EDC), N4.8 billion and Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) N2.2 billion.
Others are Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company (IEDC) N3.8 billion; Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDC) N821.3 million and Yola Electricity Distribution Company (YEDC) N1.3 billion, totaling N24.1 billion.
However, the Port-Harcourt, Ibadan, Jos and Kaduna DISCOs debts are excluded from the paramilitary’s debts.
Ministries, departments, agencies and the Nigerian Army are also owing the DISCOs N60 billion from 2013 to February.
Oduntan expressed concern that many customers did not want to pay their electricity bills, adding that the attitude hampered growth in the sector.
Oduntan urged electricity consumers to settle their bills to assist the DISCOs to supply the country adequate, reliable and sustainable electricity.
