Huge fire overnight ravaged the  Muhammadu Abubakar Rimi market, in Sabon Gari area of Kano.

Many shops and properties worth millions of naira  have been in the outbreak that began early today at about 00.30 a.m.

Shops housing shoes, chemicals and provisions were badly affected, a witness said.

Firemen using both state and private fire fighting were struggling early today to put off the fire.

The Director of the state Fire Service, Alhaji Mustapha Rulwan said the fire started at about 1am and had destroyed many shops in the market.

According to him, the fire started at the footwear section of the market.

“Our men are still trying to put out the fire as I am talking to you now we are in the market”, he said.

Policemen, civil defence personnel and members of vigilante group were stationed at various entrances to the market to keep hoodlums at bay.

This is the second time in five months that the Sabon Gari market was gutted by fire.
