2 teachers caught fighting to be prosecuted

Two certified teachers at the Adeniran Ogunsanya College of Education, Ijanikin, Lagos state, Nigeria will face severe sanctions for fighting publicly within the school premises and even stabbing themselves with knives and broken bottles.

The state House of Assembly has asked the state Deputy Governor, Idiat Adebule, who doubles as the state Commissioner for Education to ensure that the lecturers are punished.

At the time of this report, it was learnt that the fighting lecturers had been summoned to by the authorities.

Though it was not immediately known when the fight happened, the lawmakers described the act as the height of indiscpline and shame after a motion to that effect was raised by one of the lawmakers.

In his contribution, Victor Akande who represents Ojo Constituency I at the House, described the incident as ugly adding that the teachers were supposed to be role models to their students and portray morals, cultural and educative excellence.

“But they turned out to be hooligans by stabbing themselves during an argument within the school premises,” he said.

“It was sad news for me after I saw the video of the fighting teachers.

“These teachers are supposed to be epitome of morality to the students and the public, but instead they exhibited an act of hooliganism.

“I implore the House to carry out the necessary actions by investigating the matter,” he said.

Contributing, Funmilayo Tejuoso, the chairman of the House Committee on Judiciary, said if after the investigation the lecturers are found culpable, they should be relieved of their appointments and subsequently de-certified as teachers in the state and in Nigeria.

She said teachers are not only to teach students, but to portray moral attitude, good conduct and self-discipline to the pupils.

On his part, Adedamola Kasumu said: “to put an end to this act they (the teachers) need to be sanctioned so as to serve as deterrent to others.

In addition, Olusegun Olulade, who heads the health committee of the House, said: “what our children learn in school determines what they will become in future; the issue of teachers stabbing themselves in school is like teaching the students to become hooligans in future.

“The government needs to sack them for this act.”

Majority Leader of the House, Sanai Agunbiade, noted that for such infractions, the teachers need to be sacked and penalised for alleged criminal act.

Speaker of the House, Mudashiru Obasa, who presided, called on the Commissioner for Education to investigate the matter thoroughly so that those that are guilty would be penalised.
