A 27-year-old man, Sule Otapo, was on Thursday sentenced to seven and half years imprisonment by a Yaba Chief Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, for unlawful confraternity and public terrorism.

The Chief Magistrate, Mr P.A. Ojo sentenced Otapo after he pleaded guilty to a three-count charge of unlawful confraternity, public terrorism and illegal possession of arms.

Ojo held that since the accused was not a first time offender and admitted committing the offence, he would be sentenced accordingly.

“The terms of his sentence are to run consecutively without an option of fine.The accused is convicted as charged and sentenced seven and half years imprisonment which will take effect from the date of his arrest,’’ he said.

Otapo was arraigned alongside 15 others on March 8, 2016 and he was the only one who pleaded guilty to the charge.

The Prosecutor, Insp. Roman Unuigbe, told the court that the accused and some others still at large committed the offences on Feb. 27 at about 5: 30 a.m. around Agege, Ogba Areas in Lagos.

Unuigbe said that Otapo and his accomplices assembled with intent to carry out a common cause.

He said the accused were armed with cutlasses and other offensive weapons and were found to be members of the dreaded “AWAWA” confraternity.

He said the offences contravened Sections 42 (a), 44 (1) 51 and 409 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2011.
