Nigeria’s labour activists are demonstrating nationwide over the 45 per cent increase in the tariff imposed on electricity consumers.
The new tariff became effective on 1 February. In real terms, an electricity consumer that used to get 1460 units of power with N25,000, now gets 903 units.
The Nigeria Labour Congress wants a reversal of the new price.
In Abuja, the protest started from the Labour House in the central business district, with marchers targeting Abuja Disco and the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC).
To stave off the protest, NERC and Power Ministry had argued that the new power cost was justified since the unjustified ‘Fixed Charge’, has been removed. They also said the power investors need to recoup investments.
