The Internet map of the world: Only specks of lights in some African countries

The internet is often considered to be a universal resource, but just how ‘world-wide’ is it? Just where is the internet?

An amazing map from Shodan founder John Matherly shows every device connected to the internet around the globe. Shodan is a search engine for internet-connected devices.

John, who calls himself internet cartographer, created the map on 2 August by sending a ping request to every IP address on the internet.

According to a report by Gizmodo,this map might explain it better than any statistics could ever hope to: The red hot spots show where the most devices that can access the internet are located.

Eastern USA and Europe glow a deep red due to their high levels of internet connectivity, however the map also gives us an insight into internet usage in the developing world.

Look out for the mass of land on top of USA. That is Canada, sharing Africa’s features, mainly because Canada though may have the land mass, it is largely an underpopulated country.

African leaders surely have a lot of work to do to wire their citizens.
