Governor Tambuwal: vows to sanction council bosses owing salaries

Governor Aminu Tambuwal of the northwest Nigerian state of Sokoto has vowed to sanction any local government chairman who failed to pay workers’ salaries when due.

Tambuwal gave the warning in Sokoto on Monday when he addressed newsmen after meeting with the caretaker chairmen of the 23 local governments in the state.

The meeting was said to be sequel to the chairmen’s delay in the payment of the June salaries of their staffers.

” I have directed them to ensure the immediate payment of the June salaries of their workers and they must do so in full.
I have also warned them against piece-meal payment of the salaries, like some of them did in the previous months,” he added.

Tambuwal stated that the state government had made adequate arrangements to enable the local governments to effect the full payment of the outstanding June salaries to the workers of the local governments.

” So, the meeting was convened on how best to effect this payment without any delay, as we cannot afford not to pay them their rightful entitlements,’’ he said.
