Serena Williams avenged her loss in the round-robin stage to Simona Halep in devastating manner on her way to a straight sets in the showpiece match of the WTA Tour Finals in Singapore on Sunday.

Serena claimed a third successive triumph at the WTA Tour Finals and became only the third woman, after Martina Navratilova and Steffi Graf, to win the season-ending tournament five times.

Only four days ago Halep had inflicted a 6-0 6-2 defeat on Serena, the heaviest defeat in more than a decade for the 33-year old American, and the opening games of the final on Sunday leaned towards Halep getting another win over Serena.

The Romanian broke Serena’s serve in the third game of the first set to take a 2-1 lead, but Serena broke right back in the next game to level the tie before easing to claim the first set 6-3.

The top seed then maintained her devastating form to win all six games of the second set to wrap up the title and claim the $2m prize money as well as finish the year on top of the rankings.

The 6-3 6-0 win for Serena was the most one-sided championship match of the WTA Tour Finals since Belgium’s Kim Clijsters beat Frenchwoman Amelie Mauresmo 6-2 6-0 in 2003.

Meanwhile Zimbabwe’s Cara Black and Sania Mirza of India eased to the doubles title at the WTA Finals with a 6-1 6-0 win over defending champions Peng Shuai and Hsieh Su-Wei also on Sunday.

The win was Black’s third doubles title at the WTA Finals having won in 2007 and 2008 with Liezl Huber, while this was Mirza’s first ever title at the season-ending event.

35-year old Black however remains unsure if she would compete in next year’s tour, stating ”I’m not sure what I’m going to do next year, how much I’m going to play. I just want to wind down a little bit and see where the next step takes me.”

As a result, Mirza has decided to partner with Hsieh Su-Wei for the 2015 season.
