Super Falcons Beat Cameroun to Win 7th AWC Crown

The Super Falcons have won a record seventh African Women’s Championship after first half goals from Desire Oparanozie and Asisat Oshoala gave Nigeria a 2-0 win over Cameroun in the final in Namibia on Saturday.

Oparanozie put the Falcons ahead after 12 minutes with a well taken freekick while Oshoala doubled Nigeria’s advantage with her fourth goal of the competition just before half-time after being set up by Francisca Ordega.

Deborah Enganamouit had come close to equalising for Cameroun minutes after Oparanozie’s opener, as her lobbed effort beat Nigerian goalkeeper Ibubeleye Whyte but came off the crossbar.

The second half saw Nigeria hold off the Camerounians; who came close to scoring again through Enganamouit again and Iven Mihamle’s freekick which came off the woodwork, to reclaim the African title which was last won in 2010.

The result is the second time Cameroun – who host the next AWC in 2016 – have lost a final match of the AWC, having lost 5-0 to Nigeria as well back in 2004.

Nigeria and Cameroun meanwhile will represent Africa at the next FIFA Women’s World Cup holding next year in Canada, along with Cote D’Ivoire after the Ivorians finished third at the AWC courtesy of a 1-0 win over South Africa earlier on Saturday.

    Well done the Falcons, and now almost everything about football is in Nigeria.

    a. AFCON Men football championship in Nigeria.

    b. AFCON Women footbal championship in Nigeria.
    c. Under 17 FIFA world championship in Nigeria.
    NB. The under 20 FIFA Women championship would also have been in Nigeria if the Canadian Woman centre referee didn’t deny Nigeria of that win (Watch that game again, Nig vs Germany).

    Bravo! soccer Nigeria would go places if we believe in ourselves. Look at Aissat Oshoala who was immediately drafted into the senior team after her exploit in Canada what she did in Namibia: 4 goals, many assist for Oparanozie and MVPlayer of the AFCON women award. Currently what prevents the under 17 Golden booth genius Kelechi from being drafted into the Super Eagles? He will soon be wasted in Manchester city just like Chrisantus (another Nigeria under 17 golden FIFA winner) got wasted in one of the European leagues.

    I hope Shaibu Amodu should draft this boy Kelechi into Super Eagles to prove himself before they lavish him in Manchester city. Let us believe in ourselves and our youths. I am aware the parents needs money but before he is lavished overseas, he supposed to have proved his worth in the Super Eagles. Down memory lane was the long debate between Neymar and football clubs in Europe, where his father maintained that his son was not going anywhere until……..: Neymer matured further in the senior team before his father agreed to his son’s contract in Europe. I was in support of Keshi before but when he didn’t bring this boy into super Eagles and his non-shifting stands on Ike Uche, something told me Keshi has to go, if not Nigeria senior team will die a premature death.

    Nigeria should have a football policy where exceptionally performing Nigerian youths (like Aissat, Kelechi, Chrisantus et al) in the cadet teams should be drafted immediately into the Senior teams to prove their worth. This long term football management will maintain standards, and our winnings among football playing Nations will continue and ripple into a steady rise in FIFA ranking.
