Aminu Tambuwal, speaker of Nigeria’s House of Representatives, since June 2011, was this afternoon conferred with the traditional title of Mutawallen of Sokoto.

Sultan Muhammed Sa’ad Abubakar made the conferment at a ceremony attended by many political dignitaries from across Nigeria.

Abubakar also turbaned the Speaker of the Sokoto State House of Assembly, Alhaji Lawalli Zayanna, as the Sarkin Gobir of Gwadabawa (District Head).

The state’s Accountant-General, Alhaji Kabiru Tafida, was turbanned as the Sarkin Fadan Sokoto, Alhaji Aminu Iya as the Iyan Sokoto and Alhaji Fodio kyari as the Wamban Sokoto.

Abubakar appealed to politicians in the country to close ranks and work together for the peace and unity of Nigeria.

“You should eschew politics of personalities, bitterness and hatred; these obnoxious acts should not feature during the 2015 general elections.

“The ongoing war against insurgency and terrorism is succeeding but more can be achieved with a united Nigeria.’’

The Sultan said that the celebrators were bestowed with titles for their honesty, loyalty and dedication to the service of the people of the state and Nigerians.

The monarch urged them not to relent in doing good, saying “to whom much is given, much more is expected.’’

Responding on behalf of the honoured, Tambuwal commended the Sultan for finding them worthy of the titles and for his commitment to the peace and unity of Nigeria.

He said “we will continue to emulate our fore-bearers and support the Sultanate Council of Sokoto to ensure the success of its laudable activities.’’

Although President Goodluck Jonathan was billed to be a special guest at the ceremony, he did not show up, as he went to Benin, Edo state, to attend the rally of his Peoples Democratic Party. Senate President, David Mark, was also absent for the same reason.

But Mark was represented by deputy president, Senator Ike Ekweremadu.

Deputy speaker of the House of Representatives, Emeke Ihediowa led other rep members to the events.

Governor Aliyu Wammako, the host governor and many APC governors and big guns were at the event.

Among them were the party chairman, John Odigie-Oyegun, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, former head of state, Muhammadu Buhari, Governor Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, Governor Rochas Okorocha and many others.

Tambuwal is speculated to be mulling quitting the ruling PDP to join the opposition All Progressives Congress, to contest the governorship of his home state of Sokoto or the presidency of Nigeria. His absence at some key PDP functions has further added fuel to all the speculations.
