Elections for a new Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) executive will still hold on Tuesday September 30 despite the arrests of top NFF officials including incumbent President Aminu Maigari by the Department of State Services.

Maigari, who has been picked up on two previous occasions in the last three months by the DSS, was picked up again on Wednesday in Abuja immediately after arriving from a FIFA committee meeting in Zurich, Switzerland.

Also taken by the DSS were NFF Executive Committee member Chris Green and General Secretary Musa Amadu, though the DSS has not clarified if the trio were taken for only questioning or arrested.

However it has been alleged that Maigari was questioned by the DSS on the purpose of his trip to Zurich and asked to provide proof of that meeting.

It is also alleged that Maigari, along with Chris Green and Musa Amadu, were accused of conniving with ‘external influences in trying to subvert Federal Government decisions’.

Despite the controversies surrounding the top NFF officials, a board member of Nigeria’s football house stated to the BBC that the elections will still hold on Tuesday in Warri, Delta State with seven candidates in contention for the NFF presidency.

The candidates are Taiwo Ogunjobi, Yola Abba Abdullahi, Mike Umeh, Pinnick Amaju, Dominic Iorfa, Shehu Dikko and Amanze Uchegbulam.

Meanwhile, Confederation of African Football (CAF) has confirmed Ghana FA chairman Kwesi Nyantakyi as its observer at the NFF elections, with a FIFA observer also expected to be in Nigeria for Tuesday’s elections.
