Sade Adu: I am a Nigerian, I am always late

Over the decades, Nigeria and Nigerians have earned various characterisations, some painted by Nigerians themselves, some by foreigners.

Chief among the characterisations is Nigeria and Nigerians being ‘very corrupt’.

We guess, you are swearing, as you read this, that you are not part of this sweeping stereotyping, if you are a Nigerian.

International Songstress Sade Adu has however added a new characterisation to the Nigerian spirit: being always late, being part of the  Nigerian spirit.

Asked by Associated Press two years ago, why there was a 10 year hiatus between two of her hit albums,  “Lovers Rock” and “Soldier of Love,”   and how she has  been coping with her fans yearning for something new, Sade, born by a Nigerian father and a British mother,  replied:

I’m always being asked it, and I’ll always say ‘it’s tomorrow’ and they all think I’m a liar because I always imagine it’s going to be much sooner than it is. But then my life just gets in the way. I’m always asked that question. Like I said, I’m Nigerian. I’m always late.”
