Real Madrid let a two-goal lead slip as Real Sociedad rallied to claim a shocking 4-2 win on Sunday in a La Liga match while Barcelona went top of the league with a win at Villarreal in a match Lionel Messi picked an injury.

Real Sociedad went into the match looking to bounce back from opening day defeat to newly promoted neighbours Eibar and it initially seemed Sociedad would endure a long night following a blistering start by Madrid tonight.

Early goals from Sergio Ramos and Gareth Bale gave Madrid a 2-0 lead after only 11 minutes at the Anoeta, but Sociedad were level by half-time courtesy of goals in the last 10 minutes of the first half from Iñigo Martinez and David Zurutuza.

Zurutuza got his second of the night just after the hour mark as Sociedad went ahead before substitute Carlos Vela wrapped up a memorable comeback for the Basque outfit with the fourth with 15 minutes to go.

The result saw Sociedad edge past Madrid by virtue of goal difference in midtable while 2013 champions Barcelona managed to remain the only side in Spain’s top flight left with a 100% record after two matches.

The Catalan side though was made to sweat at the El-Madrigal before Sandro’s goal eight minutes from time earned a 1-0 win over Villarreal in a match Barca’s Lionel Messi pulled an abductor muscle in his right hip and has been ruled out of international duty over the next fortnight with Argentina.

In other results, Mario Mandzukic was on target as champions Atletico Madrid beat Eibar 2-1 while Valencia and Athletic Bilbao each claimed 3-0 wins over Malaga and Levante respectively.
