Lower league outfit MK Dons ensured Manchester United’s winless start to the season continued following a stunning 4-0 win over the Red Devils in a second round clash of the Capital One Cup.

The match was Manchester United’s first appearance in the second round of the competition since 1995, with that match also ending in defeat for United.

But while it took penalties for United to lose against York 18 years ago. a brace each from Will Grigg and on-loan Arsenal striker Benik Afobe did the damage tonight.

United manager Louis van Gaal fielded a second string side, with David De Gea, Javier Hernandez, Shinji Kagawa, Danny Welbeck and Johnny Evans among the high profile names in the line-up.

And while United made the brighter start to the match at the MK Stadium, it was against the run of play MK Dons took the lead midway through the first half through Grigg.

MK Dons midfielder Ben Reeves capitalised on an error by United defender Johnny Evans to set up Grigg for the opening goal in the 21st minute, a lead the hosts will hold till half-time.

The night turned worse for the visitors when Grigg doubled the lead for MK Dons just after the hour mark, coolly chesting a Reeves cross past De Gea.

Reeves went on to get a hattrick of assists seven minutes later when he set up Afobe for the third goal.

Substitute Adnan Januzaj saw an effort come of the post in the 81st minute, only for Afobe to cap a memorable night for MK Dons three minutes later with his second and the team’s fourth.

The shock result comes hours after the Red Devils completed the signing of Argentine star Angel di Maria from Real Madrid for a British record £59.7m.

In other results from the second round, Premier League duo Leicester City and Burnley joined United in being upset from the Capital One Cup following lone goal losses to Shrewsbury Town and Sheffield Wednesday respectively.

West Ham United was yet another Premier League club upset from the competition, losing 5-4 on penalties to Sheffield United following a 1-1 draw after 120 minutes at Upton Park.

Meanwhile, Jack Cork and Graziano Pelle each scored their first competitive goals for Southampton in the 2-0 win at Millwall, a John Egan own goal was enough for Newcastle United at Gillingham while West Brom edged out Oxford United 7-6 on penalties after the match at the Hawthornes ended 1-1.
