Coach of Nigeria’s U20 women’s national team Peter Dedevbo was left bitter after watching his players fall to a lone goal loss to Germany in the final of the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup in Canada.

Despite edging ball possession and creating more chances in Montreal, the Super Falconets still succumbed to a Lena Petermann strike eight minutes into extra-time to finish as runners-up for the second time in three editions.

And coach Dedevbo did not hide his disappointment at losing the final, stating ”we had enough opportunities to win this match in the first half alone,” adding that ”but while we didn’t take them, Germany had one chance and took it.”

The Falconets coach also stated the game was lost due to tactical indiscipline, though was quick to point out that the team had done Nigeria proud despite falling just short of glory at the mundial.

Nigeria had a goal ruled out for offside in the 85th minute while Asisat Oshoala, who scored four goals against Korea DPR in the semi-final, could only find the side-net from an acute angle in the first half having rounded the Germany goalkeeper.

Germany on their part have now won the competition a record-equalling third time and coach Maren Meinert put the European’s triumph down mostly to ther physical strength towards the end of the final.

Meinert also stated the team was motivated by the exploits of the men’s national team at the FIFA World Cup in Brazil, where Joachim Löw’s side defeated Argentina also by a lone goal scored in extra-time.
