Nigeria’s sprint queen Blessing Okagbare this evening won the women’s 100m final to claim the country’s first gold medal at the 2014 African Athletics Championship in Marrakech, Morocco.

Okagbare, who won two gold and one silver medal at the recently concluded Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, shrugged off the fatigue to win in Marrakech in a new Championship record of 11 seconds flat.

Afterwards, Okagbare expressed her joy at winning gold for Nigeria so soon after her exploits at the Commonwealth Games. She was also happy that three Nigerians made it to the final though she was the only one to finish on the podium.

Okagbare finished a tight women’s final just ahead of Cote D’Ivoire’s Murielle Ahoure who clocked 11.03 seconds to claim silver.

Meanwhile, Mark Jelks won the silver medal for Nigeria in the men’s 100m final with a time of 10.07 seconds, behind Wilfred Koffi Hua who claimed gold for Cote D’Ivoire in a time of 10.05 seconds.
